Ever since the days of Pong when people would happily bat a ball backwards and forwards on their TV screens, video games have always held a special appeal to people. However, there are some video game series which have really stood the test of time and have been around for years and even decades. Considering the rapid advance in video game technology since the 1970s, this is no mean feat. The most long-lasting games have had to reinvent themselves time and time again to stay relevant and popular. Here are four of the iconic video game series which are still going strong today.
Final Fantasy will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. From the original 1987 release on the Nintendo to the 15th incarnation in which you can explore the endless world of Final Fantasy 15 on your smartphone, every version of the game has featured a new world and cast of characters. There are very few video game series which can claim to be as endlessly innovative and engrossing as the Final Fantasy game. Everyone has their favourite, but the original Playstation release Final Fantasy VII still holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers.
The Legend of Zelda
The original game in the Zelda series was released around the same time as the first in the Final Fantasy franchise, and it has also gone through numerous changes from becoming a basic puzzle-solving game to an entire 3D universe. Fans of the series are known to be highly loyal, it has produced some iconic characters and it has continued to generate critical praise throughout its run.
We couldn’t have a list of the most iconic video game series without mentioning the little Italian plumber who has been around way back since 1981. In fact, he made his first appearance in another classic video game franchise, Donkey Kong. One of the great things about Mario is that he has continued to appear to different game formats, but one of the most popular is the racing game Mario Kart. There are no signs that Mario, Luigi, and the gang will be going anywhere anytime soon!
A little bit newer than the other series that we have discussed so far, Lara Croft first appeared in 1996. After years of male character dominating the action/adventure genre, the female protagonist proved to be extremely popular. Again, she doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, and the latest movie featuring Lara was released earlier this year.
Though there are plenty more game franchises which we could discuss in this article, these are just a few of the best ones which have stood the test of time. And the characters that these games have created have often become embedded in popular culture. Of course, it always takes a special bit of effort for older games to keep going, but don’t bet against these four!
