There were a lot of great movies released this year, from blockbusters to indie movies, and since we are close to the end of the year, we figured this is the best time to make a list of the top five movies of the year.

5. The Grand Budapest Hotel

This movie, which was written and directed by Wes Anderson who is known for his quirky movies, was one of the best movies released this year. The movie follows hotel concierge Monsieur Gustave, who is also a horny gigolo that sleeps with guests at the hotel, and his loyal lobby boy Zero, who is also his protege and friend. Gustave was left a valuable painting by one of his guests, who had passed, which upset her son, who doesn’t want him to get anything, setting off a chain of events, which include Gustave being framed for murder, and tries to prove his innocence.

4. Birdman

This movie by Alejandro G. Inarritu is about Riggan Thompson, a former movie star, who had starred in the Birdman movies, but had fallen into obscurity, which to him was worse than death, prompting him to attempt to regain his fame by investing the rest of his money in a Broadway production. Things start to go wrong before the play opens, and the play seems destined to be a disaster, while he also deals with his ex wife, his daughter, and girlfriend. Michael Keaton and Edward Norton sizzle in this comedic drama.

3. Gone Girl

This movie was based on a popular book with the same title, written by Gillian Flynn, and was directed by David Fincher, who did a great job retelling the story. Ben Affleck plays a man whose wife mysteriously disappears, and is presumed dead, making him the prime suspect in the murder case. It is a very interesting thriller film, filled with a lot if twists, that will keep you guessing till the end.

2. Interstellar

In this futuristic movie directed by Christopher Nolan, the planet Earth is in danger of becoming uninhabitable, and the only hope the inhabitants of the planet have is a plan by a NASA physicist, played by Michael Caine, to transport the people of Earth to another planet through a wormhole. The only problem is that a former NASA pilot, played by Matthew McConaughey, and other researchers have to find a planet that will be inhabitable for the people of Earth, before the planet is destroyed.

1. Guardians of The Galaxy

Unlike the other movies on this list, this isn’t an artistic movie, but it was probably the most fun people had at the movie theaters this year. The movie is based on lesser known Marvel comic characters, and was definitely the surprise hit of the year. It stars Chris Pratt as a space explorer, who steals an orb that a lot of people including bounty hunters are looking for. He is forced to make a deal with four other misfits he meets along the way, to split the money they earn from selling the orb, but they discover it is a serious cosmic threat, and they have to keep it away from the people that are trying to kill them for it. It is a very interesting movie that the whole family can enjoy, which makes it the best movie of the year.
